WHOIS Domain Lookup: Find Domain Registration Details
Look up WHOIS records for any domain. Find registrar, registration date, expiry date, and nameservers with our free WHOIS domain lookup tool.
WHOIS is a protocol that queries databases of registered domain names to return registration details including the registrar, registration and expiry dates, nameservers, and sometimes contact information. Domain WHOIS lookups are essential for checking domain availability, verifying ownership, finding expiry dates before they lapse, and investigating potentially fraudulent or infringing domains.
How to Use the WHOIS Domain Lookup Tool
- Enter the domain name — Type the full domain including the TLD (e.g.,
example.com). Do not includehttps://or paths. - Click Lookup — The tool queries the appropriate WHOIS server for that TLD.
- Read the results — Results include registrar name, registration date, expiry date, nameservers, and registrant details (if not redacted).
- Note privacy-redacted fields — Most registrars use WHOIS privacy (GDPR compliance). Registrant contact details are often replaced with proxy information.

Why Use a Domain WHOIS Lookup?
- Check domain availability — If a WHOIS query returns \"Domain not found,\" the domain is likely available for registration.
- Verify domain ownership — Confirm that a domain is registered to the expected organization before conducting business.
- Monitor expiry dates — Domains that expire can be snapped up by competitors or domain squatters. Check expiry dates proactively.
- Investigate brand infringement — Find out who registered a domain that uses your brand name, as a first step toward a dispute filing.
WHOIS Privacy and GDPR
Since GDPR came into effect in 2018, most registrars redact personal contact information from public WHOIS records. You will typically see proxy email addresses and registrar addresses instead of the registrant's actual details. Registrar information, nameservers, creation and expiry dates are usually still visible. If you need contact details for legal purposes, you must go through the registrar's formal contact-disclosure process or ICANN's procedures.
WHOIS vs. RDAP
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for the WHOIS protocol. RDAP returns structured JSON instead of plain text, supports HTTPS, and has better internationalization support. ICANN mandated RDAP support for all accredited registrars by 2019. Both WHOIS and RDAP query the same underlying data, but RDAP is easier to parse programmatically. Our tool queries both where available.
